Potential Collapse of High-Rise Leads to Evacuations in NYC
Authorities in New York City took emergency measures on Tuesday, evacuating a street block after an under-construction high-rise exhibited signs of structural instability. The building, situated near the notable Grand Central Station and Chrysler Building, is undergoing renovations to transition from an office space to luxury apartments.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported, "Two structural columns have buckled, and there are multiple cracks and sagging floors, indicating the building's continued instability. We have observed further movement in one of the compromised columns since arriving on the scene." Despite the gravity of the situation, no injuries have been reported, and all workers have been accounted for.
In response to the crisis, project engineers are collaborating with structural specialists to devise a stabilization strategy for the building. Emergency materials, including struts and beams, are being deployed to fortify the structure.
Localized Collapse Risk Highlighted by Fire Chief
New York City's Fire Chief, John Esposito, outlined that due to the building's steel-framed design, a total collapse was unlikely. Instead, there is a risk of a localized collapse, which still necessitates the immediate evacuation and closure of nearby streets.
Among those evacuated were 400 students from a nearby school. The initial reports of falling bricks were received at approximately 8 a.m. local time, prompting a swift emergency response to the bustling area near Grand Central Station. Upon further inspection, officials identified buckling in two columns on the 21st and 22nd floors and sagging floors spanning from the 21st to the 26th floors.
Safety Measures and Public Assurance
Mayor Mamdani reassured residents and businesses in the vicinity that they would be able to return once the area is deemed safe. The closure of nearby streets to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic remains in effect as a precautionary measure.
